Celebrate African Art Through the Ages
Emmanuel Amoah Gogo interprets the messages found in the art for the group’s understanding of the richness of the many different African cultures represented at the museum. This tour transports you to selected countries in Africa to learn about their civilization, cultures, and how Africans have been influential in shaping the world’s developmental progress. Discover how Africa’s sons and daughters have not only developed the continent but have contributed to the development of other continents through travel and trade (this tour does not focus on the Trans-Atlantic slave trade).
We begin our journey by looking at early African art and travel through to modern African art. The exhibits at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art begin around the 15th century, and also include art from modern times. See African wood art and interpret the symbols, utility, and messages, ceramics made by women for household, music, and governmental activities, and baskets to show how brilliant Africans utilized materials of canes and grass.
